Configuring the X-Window System

To start: dpkg-reconfigure xserver
where xserver is xserver-svga or xserver-xfree86 or xserver-s3 .

For most settings, you choose the defaults. Exceptions include:

Item	Suggested setting(s)
Mouse port	/dev/ttyS0 for serial on COM1
	/dev/ttyS1 for serial on COM2
	/dev/psaux for PS/2
Mouse protocol (serial)	Try Microsoft, then Mousesystems
Mouse protocol (PS/2)	Usually PS/2
Colour Depth	Try 8 bit, then 15 bit (if 8 bit works)
Resolutions	Choose 800x600, 640x480
	Press $\langle\textnormal{tab}\rangle$ to move to OK
Monitor Frequency	Choose Advanced if you have horizontal and vertical refresh rates
	and choose Simple otherwise
